St Gabriel's Junior Choir

St Gabriel’s Junior Choir meets once a month to sing in the Sunday morning service. Young people aged 7-13 can take part – we welcome children and adults of all faith and none.

Sign up is on a Sunday -by- Sunday basis with no strings attached. No previous experience of reading sheet music or choral singing is necessary. Sunday sessions incorporate dedicated musicianship training. Each Sunday there will be a song or anthem we will focus on – the sheet music and a guide track for this will be sent out a week in advance.

Junior Choir has continued in 2024 as a regular feature of worship at St Gabriel’s, with a monthly service – the 0945 on the second Sunday of each month – designated as a service where children from 7-13 are invited to come and sing with the adult choir.

We’ve continued with the format where Junior Choir members had the communion anthem sent to them a week in advance as sheet music, together with an audio guide track specially recorded for them, so they can sing along, learning principally by ear, and as they progress in musicianship, they will use the sheet music more and the audio guide less.

All the children in Junior Choir are now working towards the standards they’ll need to reach to be installed as choristers, at which point they will start to wear a surplice on top of their cassock.

We’re following the Royal School of Church Music’s ‘Voice for Life’ scheme, which has a digital portal they can access in-between Junior Choir services to work on their musicianship with bitesize videos and quizzes to complete.

The Junior Choir is trained by Tim Burke (St Gabriel’s Choir Director, Director of the Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia)
